Chess Terms Explained

Every chess term you are likely to meet, explained in plain English — what it means, a concrete example, how to spot it over the board, and the mistake most players make with it. 27 terms, no jargon assumed.

Tactics

Short, forcing patterns that win material or deliver mate.

Strategy

Long-term ideas about position, structure and timing.

Rules

How the game actually works — including the rules people get wrong.

Endgames

Techniques that decide games once most pieces have come off.

Openings

Ideas that shape the first phase of the game.

Learn these patterns on the board

Reading a definition is the start. To actually recognise these patterns in your own games, drill them: solve tactics puzzles that use them, review your games to see which ones you missed, or ask the coach about any position you do not understand.
