What Is a Battery in Chess?

A battery is two or more long-range pieces stacked on the same line so their power combines.

Definition

A battery is formed when two pieces that move along lines are placed one behind the other on the same file, rank or diagonal. Doubled rooks on an open file, a queen backing a rook, or a queen and bishop on the same diagonal all qualify. The front piece can crash into a defended square because the piece behind recaptures, which is what turns a stand-off into a breakthrough.

Example

Rooks on d1 and d2 with a queen on d3 form a battery on the d-file. Even a well-defended pawn on d5 eventually falls, because Black cannot add defenders faster than White adds attackers.

How to spot it

  • Open and half-open files are where rook batteries belong.
  • A queen and bishop on the same diagonal aimed at h7 or h2 is a classic attacking battery.
  • Put the less valuable piece in front when you intend to capture first.
  • Alekhine's gun — two rooks with the queen behind — is the heaviest version.

Putting the queen in front of the rooks. The queen is the most valuable piece in the battery, so it should almost always sit behind, not lead the charge into defended squares.
